Winter Fire Prevention Tips
Winter is upon us and that means furnaces, fireplaces and space heaters are getting cranked up. Below are some safety tips to prevent fire damage in your home.
- Make sure your furnace has been checked out by a professional and is ready for service. An annual checkup is recommended for your entire HVAC unit.
- If you have a fireplace, make sure you have had a chimney sweep clean the flue and chimney. The creosote build up in a chimney has caused many home fires. One way to minimize creosote build up is to not use newly cut, unseasoned or wet wood. Another is to avoid a slow or smoldering fire.
- According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, space heaters cause more than 25,000 residential fires per year and more than 300 deaths. A good rule of thumb for using a space heater is to put it in the middle of a room and at least 3 feet away from anything that will burn.
